Mist Over the Wooden Valley

18"x 24" oil
The show is over! The Laguna Beach Festival of Arts has ended for another year. I'm sad to see it go but I'm glad to have life getting back to something like normal again.
This was a painting that sold in the last few days of the show.

I had a great week!

Quite a few sales happened this week as a result of the Laguna show. This was my largest painting shown this summer - about 5'x 4'. I started the show in July with my restaurant series, switched to landscapes and will re-hang the booth again this week (Friday) with more restaurant work for the remainder of the show.

Summer Eucalyptus

12"x 12" oil NFS
This painting was awarded a 2nd place in the SOCALPAPA summer online competition. We had a morning quick draw at Doheny. I painted the guys playing volleyball, knocked over my turps jar, forgot the paper towels so had to borrow napkins from people picnicking nearby. There were dozens of questions and of course the light changed from very overcast to bright sunshine just to mess with my composition but that's why we paint plein-air. It's challenging and when we get a good one, it really means something.

Morning Harvest at Frank's Vineyard

To Rose...It was great to meet you and your family this evening. Thank you for adding "Morning Harvest" to your collection.
Thank you!
To those that wrote me about the previous post, I want to thank you for your support. I know that it seems that a middle initial would be the answer but unfortunately the other artist does use an initial and no-one pays any attention to it. The confusion will come up again but maybe it will bother me less in time.

People Who "Borrow" Other's Themes!
It has come to my attention, again, this summer at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts that there is another "Susan Cox" who curiously paints the same themes as myself and I have, once again, been confused with her.
An artist cannot copyright a theme or concept but it becomes awkward when another artist has the same name AND paints the same subject matter! This may seem paranoid on my part but this has been going on for years now and I see no solution but to bring it out in front of my audience. The reason that I am suspicious is that many years ago this person introduced herself, her husband took her aside and within earshot of me, said to her, "YOU should be painting this." I laughed it off at the time until I heard that not only had she gone on to paint that theme but the restaurant series.
Many artists paint these themes but once again, I stress that this person has the same name!
If you are in doubt as to whether a "Susan Cox" painting is mine or not, feel free to send me a photo and I'll let you know. A woman that I met last summer at the Festival thought that she'd been collecting MY paintings only to find out that they were the other person's work!
There is only one "Susan Cox" at the LB Festival of Arts. I have sold through galleries in the Napa Valley, San Francisco, the Sawdust Festival, and San Diego. I have NEVER sold through restaurants!
I regret that I must send out this message but I would very much like to retain my own reputation and NOT lend it to anyone else!

Lunch at Anisette Brasserie

Chef Alain Giraud showing my grandson how to use crayons!
High Fives for great service at Anisette!
There will be fewer postings here because I will be focusing on work for the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts from now until July. I was in Santa Monica today at Anisette Brasserie (http://www.anisettebrasserie.com/) gathering painting material. Wandered first through the Santa Monica Farmer's Market then photographed the restaurant but it was so difficult to concentrate on the camera when the food arrived!
Chef Alain Giraud appeared on the floor greeting his customers and to my surprise stopped at our table to spend some time chatting with my grandson, sharing pictures of his son with his soccer team on his iPhone! As I peered over my grandson's shoulder I caught pictures of beautiful culinary compositions on plates that Chef had recorded. Wow! And here he was sharing this with a five year old! This man really knows how to dazzle his audience.
And I don't want to close without stating how wonderful the service is at this restaurant. Thank you, Greg, Chef Alain and the rest of the staff for a lovely afternoon.

No Worries!!!

12"x 10" oil panel set in handmade frame.
This piece is part of our April Fool's theme day called "Out of the Box." The idea is that we create a work that is different from our usual works. I had great fun with this one! Let me know what you think.

"Waaaa! They taxed my BAIL-OUT!!"

They say that an oil painting lives forever and this one seems to have a life of it's own! Maybe I listen to much talk radio, read too much news, worry too much about the economy and what's happening to my country. Anyway, I like re-titling this painting and will probably continue to do so!
Formerly titled " Mr. Liddy Says That I Have to Give Half of it Back!!"
Formerly titled "Waaaaa!!! (It's the economy, stupid!)" This was a dig at SOME of my fellow artists who were complaining that I'd dropped my prices. Hey, I've got to make a living!
